What is Import Export Code?
Import export code (IEC) is a key 10-digit business Identification number issued by DGFT (Director General of Foreign Trade), Ministry of Commerce & Industry. It is mandatory to have Import Export Code for Import-Export Business. IEC is valid for a lifetime, and after the GST regime, the IEC number is the same as your PAN card number.
What is the use of Import Export Code?
Unless specifically exempted, you can not export from India or Import in India without an Import Export Code. IEC is also required to claim Export and Import Incentive Schemes like MEIS, SEIS, RoSTCL, EPCG, etc.
Who issues Import Export Code?
IEC is electronically (e-IEC) issued by the Director General of Foreign Trade, which comes under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India.

What is the validity of the Import Export Code?
Import Export Code is valid for the lifetime. There is no need for renewal.
Is iec code required for export of services?
IEC is required to import or export services & technology when the service or technology provider wants to avail the benefits under Foreign Trade Policy or is dealing with specified services or technologies.
Who can get the IEC?
An individual or a company who wants to do international business can get an IEC. Individuals can use either the name of their company or their name directly to apply for IEC.
Is it necessary to have a registered company to get an Import Export Code?
The following firms can obtain Import-export code: “Proprietorship, Partnership, LLP, Limited Company, Trust, HUF, and Society.”
Are import-export licenses and import-export codes the same?
No. Import export licenses are required over and after the IEC (import export code). Import export license is required for restricted items before import or export. For example, scrapped rubber tire comes under the restricted category, requiring a special import license (or import Permit). In contrast, the Import export code is a mandatory certificate for the Import Export business.
